Which One is Best—Minoxidil or Finasteride?
Monday, October 12th, 2009
Years ago, men and women didn’t have many receding hairline treatment options. Luckily, things are different today. The FDA has approved two chemicals that have been proven to re-grow hair. These chemicals are finasteride and minoxidil. There is a lot of debate about which one is safer and more effective. And if you’re a woman, there is no choice–only one of these chemicals is safe to use.
Receding Hairline Treatment #1—Finasteride
Finasteride is better known by its brand name Propecia. A recent 5-year study revealed that 48% of men using Propecia experienced some hair regrowth, while 42% reported no additional loss of hair. If you’re interested in trying Propecia, you’ll need to get a prescription from a doctor.
Note that Propecia is for men only. In fact, women are not supposed to even touch the pills. Especially women who might get pregnant or are breastfeeding. Finasteride can cause abnormalities in the sex organs of male babies.
Another problem with Propecia is that some men experience negative sexual side effects, such as impotence. There are even reports that these side effects are permanent and irreversible—lasting long after use of the drug has been discontinued. Propecia might be an effective hair-growing treatment, but at what price?
Receding Hairline Treatment #2—Minoxidil
Now let’s look at minoxidil. There are no sexual side effects associated with minoxidil. And you don’t need a prescription to buy it. However, minoxidil can cause a very itchy scalp. Many men and women who use products containing minoxidil report excessive flaking and dandruff.
For this reason, many men and women prefer using receding hairline treatments that contains both minoxidil and plenty of hair moisturizer. Currently, the two most popular products that do this are Scalp Med and Provillus.
Scalp Med comes with three bottles. One is the minoxidil. The second bottle contains essential amino acids, minerals, herbs, and nutrients that feed and moisturize the hair. The third bottle is a hair spray that adds body and fullness to thin hair.
Scalp Med can be an effective receding hairline treatment, but it is very expensive. A 6-month supply is $349.95.
Provillus, on the other hand, is considerably cheaper. A 6-month supply costs only $199.95, which is about a dollar a day. Like Scalp Med, Provillus is a specially formulated mixture of minoxidil, moisturizers, and nutrients.
But many people think that Provillus is the best receding hairline treatment for men and women because it also comes with a vitamin supplement that increases the body’s ability to grow healthy hair. In essense, Provillus helps hair grow from both the outside (the liquid solution) and the inside (the vitamin supplement).
In my opinion, Provillus definitely offers the best value as a receding hairline treatment. To find out more about Provillus please visit the official website HERE.
